Personology

Personology Is A Science...

Every face tells a story. Such a simple statement, but one that has fascinated civilization since the Egyptians. With the advanced genetic research tools available now, scientists may finally solve the riddle of why our faces show two sides. Another scientific tool, Personology, correlates these structural differences with behavior, thus revealing the key to personality.

Personology has its roots in early Egyptian research that studied body and facial structure to identify behavioral variations. Socrates himself selected his pupils using Personology principles and Aristotle furthered these studies.

In the late 1930's Judge Edward Vincent Jones began to correlate personality traits by identifying their physical markers and the specific behaviors attached to each trait. Prisoners who appeared in his courtroom found a judge who had already "guessed" with great accuracy the crime of which they were accused. Soon, he began teaching his friends this skill and eventualIy started classes.

In the decades following, Robert L. Whiteside studied and worked with Jones at the Personology Foundation of Los Angeles. In the 50's Whiteside formed a team of personologists who validated the 68 basic traits found primarily in the face, head and hands within a 1% level of error.

Personology Is An Art...

The Personology Profile is a comprehensive language for learning about ourselves. Yet it goes beyond that. Through it you can tune into your learning, thinking, expressive and perceptual style, feelings and emotions, values, desires, interests and physical action needs. It is a documentation of your own trait patterns and their interactions that produce your innate talents and skills; a documentation presented to you in simple language that will allow you to put this knowledge to use in your own self-unfoldment. The Personology Profile provides you with a self-portrait that is uncannily accurate. Many people claim that the Profile recognizes them in entirety. Validation for some, an epiphany experience for others, you may feel fully identified for your sensibilities, preferences and values.

Unlike other instruments, such as the Enneagram and the Meyers-Brigg Type Indicator, there is no "typecasting." We consult with you on your career and relationships with others. Your Personology Profile provides a custom description of YOU.

Roots in Ancient Egyptian Science

The history of Personology stretches back many millennia to the ancient Egyptians. Egyptians studied body and facial structure to identify how people act or react in the moment. This work was continued by Socrates and his pupils, Plato and Aristotle.

In the early twentieth century, a reexamination of these ancient beliefs and principles raised important questions. Why is it that while we appear to be alike in our anatomy and physiology, we seem different in temperament and personality? Why do we experience these differences in a full range of emotions: from excitement and love, to understanding and collaboration, to irritation, conflict, and violence?

Research in the Twentieth Century

The questions above underlie the theoretical foundations of a domain of Personology, a subset of the more general new physiognomy. Edward Vincent Jones pioneered the work in the 1920's as he undertook research to create a set of empirical correlations between the body's structure and the personality. He began to research physiognomy during his law practice and career as a Justice of the Peace. The first phase of research occurred from 1920-1940. Jones painstakingly put together a series of empirical correlations from the historic material, in Western scientific physiognomy, dating back 1,800 years to writings by Aristotle, Galen, and Hippocrates. He found considerable information both in Western culture and in the rich history of physiognomy and medicine in China dating back nearly 3,000 years. As a result of his work and research, he received an honorary doctor of medicine from the University of Mexico.

Jones initiated what is today the oldest private research group in the United States in physiognomy. His work introduced a contemporary interpretation of physiognomy that has evolved into the precursor to The Integrated Personality Profile, known as JWB Personology.

Statistical Correlation Between Structure and Personality

In 1950 Robert L. Whiteside applied modem statistical methodology to Jones' work, which began the second phase of research. Together, they hypothesized a relationship between one's form and structure, and the personality. Whiteside, personally trained by Jones, also had a formal background in psychology and statistics.

Whiteside began with the question, "Is there validity in characterizing variations in human individuality based on variations in the structural proportions seen in the human body?" He designed an opinion survey utilizing a sample of 1,200 individuals who had previously undergone a personological analysis at the San Francisco Personology Foundation.

The results indicated that 86% of those surveyed confirmed: a) the description of their personality was accurate; b) the vocational recommendations were useful when followed; and c) that they had received benefits from the analysis.

During the period of 1951-1955, a third phase of research began on the statistical validation of individual traits starting with a base population of 1,050 adults. Their physiognomy was analyzed by Whiteside and his staff.

A total of 68 personality traits corresponded with specific degrees of measure in the body's form and structure. These correlations validated the findings that the personality can be characterized based on observations of the form and structure of the body, or the body's physiognomy.

As a result of the third phase of research spearheaded by Whiteside, personology and the analysis form were revised and categorized into the areas of physical, automatic expression, action, emotional, and thinking traits.

Significant Application of Analysis

The fourth stage of research began in 1958. William F. Burtis, an industrial and mechanical engineer, joined Whiteside's team of researchers in another statistical survey. In a longitudinal study from 1959-1971, 500 business associates and friends made approximately 11,000 individual judgments on the accuracy of a personological evaluation of people they knew. The results of the survey were: 81% agreements, 3% disagreements and 16% undecided. Whiteside, Burtis, and others conducted the survey, entitled, "Survey in Fruitfulness in Application to Daily Life." Each person receiving the survey had voluntarily undergone a recent personological analysis and consultation.

From just over 500 respondents, the results of the survey were statistically significant in showing a high degree of accuracy in two areas: the perceived benefits of the analysis and the practical value when used in personal relationships and communication.

The Interstate College of Personology used the results of the longitudinal study to devise a method for analyzing vocations based on strong personality traits that best suited the demands of a career. These developments led to a larger number of personology students, many from the human resources and psychology fields.

Personology's New Language

A fifth phase of research on the personology analysis began in 1980 with Dr. Michael Bader, a physicist; Daniel Whiteside, (Robert Whiteside's son); Gordon Stokes, William Burtis, and others. The results of that research provided a major overhaul of the language of personology. It also reflected a general shift in the philosophical prospective of the human being from the previous 40 years.

From 1960 to 1995 nearly 15,000 individuals, learning about this service primarily through word of mouth, have retained a certified consultant to provide a personological analysis. The bulk of this work was done by Robert Whiteside, William Burtis, and also included a number of others in this pioneering group of colleagues.

A New Procedure

In 1996, a new team called Jamega Personality Profile Consultants, guided by William Burtis, developed a highly effective new procedure. The new procedure is called The Integrated Personality Profile (TIPP). It represents a dynamic interface between the individual and what he or she needs to do to experience the greatest sense of fulfillment.

The Integrated Personality Profile identifies clusters of natural energy in people that become activated when appropriately applied at work, play, and in relationships. When activated, the clusters automatically increase the ability to focus one's attention and increase one's sense of personal power. Hence, the name Power Clusters. The Power Clusters (created by William and Janelle Burtis) answer the question, "Which activities and tasks will best stimulate my energy to flow? Where should I apply my talents and my attention for the greatest results and satisfaction?" The new procedure identifies more than 50 Power Clusters and is a vital tool for self-knowledge as well as knowledge about one's children, mate, co-workers, etc.

Personology And Genetics

The 21st century has arrived and with it the promise of genetics. Scientists predict that genetic research will lead to the eradication of many diseases and disorders. Inside the minute, twisted double-helix of our DNA lies the answer to many of our problems.

Genetics is a key factor in Personology. Take a moment to look at your hands. The pattern of veins is different on each hand! Turn your hands over and took at the wrists . . . here again, the veins have different configurations. On one wrist the veins may straddle the tendon; on the other wrist, a vein may cross the tendon.

The asymetrical aspects of the body are commonly known. Fingerprints are different on one hand from the other. Eyeglasses or contacts often require a different prescription for each eye. Some individuals have one blue eye and one brown eye.

What is the reason for this bilateral asymmetry? Genetic variation. Each of us receives 23 chromosomes from each parent. While these blend substantially, differences still appear.

Function Follows Form

In three out of four people, the right ear, right side of the face, and right side of the body, reflect the father's parentage; the left side reflects the maternal contribution. These statistics were obtained in photographic research of 44 families at the Interstate College of Personology. This college specializes in native talents and how best to express them (such as an ear for music).

Since natural talents are transmitted via the narrow genetic bridge and function through our human structure, personology research focuses on individual build and has measured thousands of adults and children. For example, hands whose fingers are nearly the same length and have square fingertips exhibit the highest hand coordination. Measurements of bilateral asymmetry can indicate which hand has the highest natural dexterity.

Father Is Right

Because the right side of the body typically carries the father's genetic contribution, the right arm and leg generally have a more masculine posture, with the elbow standing further away from the body and the right leg slightly curved outward. Contrast this with the left side: the left elbow generally sits closer to the body and the left knee is curves inward. Interestingly, one-quarter of all subjects display a reversal of these traits.

In photographing scores of family groups, research indicates that the right side of the person, including the ear, follows the paternal heritage, together with the left forehead and left top of the head. Obviously then, the left side of the person, including the ear, follows the maternal heritage, together with the right forehead and top of head.

Using Structural Variations To Succeed

Bilateral variations are common and important. The highest physical coordination comes from the strongest side of the human mechanism dominating a person's action. Peak coordination arises when the dominant eye, hand and foot are on the same side of the body. The rising popularity of the Delcato-Carl treatment for stuttering and other verbal and language blocks, is largely based on redirecting "sidedness" in functioning.

Eyedness and handedness are congenital. In the natural pattern, the individual who is right-handed will also be right-eyed, with the brain's left hemisphere controlling the eyedness/handedness. The reverse is true if the individual is natively left-eyed/left-handed. Serious maladjustments of coordination, speech and thought may occur if the natural handedness is changed later in life (especially in the early school grades). This alters the natural flow of message/impulses from brain to expression and from nerve reception to brain impression. In personology such a confusion of eyedness and handedness is called mixed dominance. Mixed dominance can be an important factor in understanding the kind of expression an individual produces.

Taking Sides With Nature

Because of bilateral asymmetry we get pneumonia first in one lung, a trick-knee on one side and a single eye that twitches when we tire. Even hair may behave better on one side than the other. This variation in structure is most probably the reason for right or left dominance and determines handedness.

Gesell of Yale postulated that native neck-torsion in infants was a key factor in determining which side is naturally the master side. Upon hearing a noise, some infants would turn left to see what made the noise, others would turn right.

The relationship between how living beings are built and how they function has a long and rich history. Aristotle, a father of science, knew the Grecian systems of his times and is said to have chosen the generals for a pupil of his, Alexander the Great. Aristotle's treatise on the subject was lost in the Dark Ages and has now been refashioned in the 21th century.

How Personology Helps You

Personology is the study of structure and form in the human body. It is specific. It can be taught because it is exact. It is based on the observation of proportion; cells are devoted to specific functions and the capacity of each personality trait is indicated by the number of cells devoted to it. As we are built, so we function.

1) As infants we already have a genetic code for own unique behavior and personality trends. Our genetic programming indicates our instinctive function. Linking our belief system with innate structure/function removes the mystery from behavior. We gain a more realistic appreciation of our own power to choose in the moment and move from restriction to unfoldment as effective human beings.

2) Structure/function knowledge leads to an informed distinction between our conditioned self-image and our true innate potential. This knowledge is freedom: freedom to choose, freedom to adapt and freedom to communicate.

3) The integration and synthesis of Personology reaps the benefits of peace of mind, good physical health, intellectual growth and economic gain.

How You Can Use Personology

1) Work smarter. Knowing at first glance the traits that make your clients act the way they do - knowing what traits to watch for in yourself in order to deal most effectively and efficiently on the job - knowing just what to look for to hire the right person for the right job - what to deal with in personnel problems; sales; business and industrial counseling - these are specific uses of personology in business. Personology is a key tool in selecting the right vocation and the right vocation is a prerequisite to success!

The Vocational Workshop is an in-depth program on the value of work in an individual's life. Every person has a unique personality make-up which can be quickly and accurately pointed in the direction of certain careers that "match" the individual's needs.

The Personnel Hiring/Training/Terminating Seminar gives a sound understanding of hiring the right applicant for the right job, as well as establishing a more accurate expectation of job performance and supervisory responsibility. Emphasis is also placed on termination skills from a structure/function viewpoint.

The Sales Techniques Workshop is special workshop for people who want to individualize their sales communication with prospects and clients. The whole selling exchange is enhanced which speeds the creation of rapport and makes closing the sale a mutual "win" for both salesperson and client.

2) Relate better. When life partners can objectively compare their personality profile, they can learn to anticipate the conflicts that are bound to occur in daily life. With this knowledge the mutual goals in success, sex and family life can be reached with far less friction and far more understanding, cooperation and love. Disharmony in couples, regardless of age, is usualy only a clash in traits, not a lack of love. Personology gives you what you need to know to make your partnering relationship work.

Through your Personal Profile you will obtain documentation of your own trait patterns, their interaction, and skills to put this knowledge to use in self-unfoldment. Help in choosing the right career, hobbies and recreations is also provided with your personal profile upon request.

The Communications Seminar is a 20 hour program applying structure/function trait information to communications, both personal and professional.

3) Parent wisely. From the moment of birth children are unique beings. Their personality profile at age two reveals the same traits that will make them act and react thirty years later (unless conscious choice takes place). You save emotional and economic energy by knowing precisely what your child needs. You will know what natural gifts to train, and how to direct, discipline, inspire and enjoy them!

The Personality Basic Traits Course provides instruction in more than 20 structure/function trait factors. With this foundation for personal development, you are well on the way to a sharper awareness of your unique makeup and how to also spot these important structure/function traits in others.

1) Choose a Certified Personology Counselor:

Confirm that the chosen personologist is certified and current with our newest techniques by contacting the PRDC. Inc., the Personology Institute Training Director, or a personologist listed on our site.

Note: There are personology counselors who claim certification, however, they may not have been certified by our firm nor graduated from our courses. We have no knowledge of the type, accuracy or quality of profiles they create.

2) Choose the type of profile you need:

Full Profile - All traits, list of special talents, recreations, avocations and careers right for you

Mini-Profile - Special profiles done for specific purpose, ie: sales person, teacher, coach, counselor and etc.

Photo Profile - Submit 3 to 7 photos

Career Profile - Profile for guidance on career choices

Relationship Profile - Profiles for personal or business relationship comparisons (boss/employee, parent/teen, pre-marriage, marriage and etc.)

Personnel Profile - Profiles for personnel placement and/or managers or directors

3) Make two appointments:

Full profiles usually require about 1 1/2 hrs. for each appointment. The first appointment is to gather data, the second is to deliver the information to the client.
Notes

* Relationship profiles require each person to have a full profile plus an additional counseling appointment.
* Most specialized profiles take only one appointment to accomplish.
* The fees for profiles vary according to area and personology counselor. Check with your chosen personologist for their fee and schedules.
